Is the Caller [All] There?

Caller: I thought I was calling James Elementary.

Me: I can transfer you.

Caller: This phone system. Why have a phone system if it doesn’t work?

Me: I know. It’s been like this for years. The trick is to enter the school extension as soon as you hear the automated voice.

Caller: I pressed 4 for James.

Me: That’s what I’m saying. As soon as you hear the automated voice, enter the extension. Don’t wait for prompts.

Caller: This is such a ridiculous system. I wait for the prompts –

Me: That’s what I’m saying. Don’t wait for any prompts. As soon as you hear the automated voice, enter the school’s extension. It’s – 4-2-2-

Caller (Talking over me, not letting me finish the 5-digit extension): I’M IN A DENTIST’S OFFICE AND I HAVE TO CALL MY SON OUT OF SCHOOL TODAY!

I transferred him without another word; he didn’t deserve a word from me. IF YOU’RE CALLING FROM A DENTIST’S OFFICE AND HAVE TO CALL A SCHOOL ABOUT YOUR CHILD, DON’T WASTE TIME TALKING ABOUT OUR PHONE SYSTEM, YOU ASSHOLE!

Is the Caller [All] There?

Caller (Spitting in anger): I'm calling about *Gari Cline. He was arrested for child porn and I warned the principal about him years ago and no one listened to me and I want to talk to someone.

Me: I don't recognize the name. Is this a teacher or a student? What building did you want?

I don't remember verbatim, but she kept saying this name and wouldn't tell me if this was a teacher or not. Finally, she said something about her daughter being in our middle school at the time and is now in high school. I was able to figure out from in between her rantings that she was talking about a teacher. I said I wasn't aware of this. And she demanded: How can you not be?

I still didn't understand what her issue was. If this was a teacher who'd been arrested, and he wasn't even her daughter's teacher anymore, what did she want?

I asked her if he'd been fired, because if he was, then I'd ask her why she's calling, and who she wants to talk to. This conversation wasn't making any sense to me.

Caller: He should have been fired!

I went to the superintendent's secretary. I shouldn't have involved her; I should have sent her to the middle school principal. But when someone accuses a teacher of child pornography, well, I think that the superintendent should be involved.

After I transferred her, I Googled the teacher's name. Nothing about an arrest. Nothing about bad behavior at all! Nothing but good stuff about him, except for a bad rating on one of those "rate my teachers" websites. I went to the PA Judicial Portal site, which displays arrest information, and there was NO CASE at all with his name!

Later, some FedEx guys were delivering huge Epson printers. I can't take large computer-related items in the reception area; they have to go to our tech services office around the back. The one guy said, "You're not making me put these back on the truck, are you?!"

I said, "I'm sorry, but I won't be able to take them down the stairs. They have to go around back."

He said, "You know what happened to the last guy who brought things back there? He was fired!"

I said, "He was fired because he just dumped boxes around back and forged a fake name on the signature line! But I liked him, and I'm sorry he got fired."

He said, "Well, that's not the only reason he got fired."

I said, "I'll call downstairs and tell them that you're delivering."

This conversation wasn't as organized as I'm writing it here. The guy was argumentative and defensive and kept interrupting me about the other guy getting fired. I kept saying that I'd call downstairs and he kept talking over me. Then he asked if I'd call downstairs and let them know he's coming. I shouted, "That's what I'm doing!"

Did I mention that there was a full moon that day?

Yom has a better camera than I. She can zoom in and take selfies - I can't. Anyway, I'd told Trish from the Tea Room that it was Yom's birthday, and they gave her a special plate. Very nice! We thought that the little boot was chocolate, but it was plastic. The wrapped item is a tea bag.

This is Trish, the owner. If you're in the area, or if you plan to be, please please please go to the tea room and the Clay Rat Studio!

July 3 - I don't know what happened to my pictures, so Google Tilly Mint's Tea Room in Souderton, PA.

Mom-in-Law's Birthday

Saturday was "yomeleh's" birthday. YOM means Your Other Mother, and the suffix "aleh or eleh" is a cute, diminutive form. So, "yomeleh" is "Little Yom."

I took her out for her birthday and she and I had so much fun. We went to Tilly Mint's Tea Room in Souderton, PA, and then walked around the corner to the Clay Rat Studio, where we bought artsy stuff. I got a new pair of earrings, a journal (I LOVE journals), some magnets, and a little green ducky.

It's a sad day when your mother-in-law is thinner and cuter than you!

Yomeleh doesn't want to eat the ladybug sandwich - she wants to take it home to make it her pet.

Taking food pictures; a sign of the 2000s.

Tilly Mint's was having a Valentine's Day lunch, as you can see. The little pastry with the eyes is a hedgehog, and Yom decided not to eat hers; she definitely wants it as a pet!

At the Clay Rat, and a final food picture!

Is the Caller [All] There?

A call was forwarded to me from one of our elementary schools. I was so flustered and angry that I can't recollect details. So this man with a thick Indian accent asks about the start of school for next year. I tell him that it will be decided upon on the next board meeting - the February board meeting, which is only 10 days away!

He starts yelling at me about summer camp schedules and he needs to plan for summer camp. Then he says, "Are you a parent? Are you a parent?" I tell him no, I'm not a parent, and tell him again about the board finalizing the calendar on the 23rd. Then he yells again about summer camp and adds, "Do you see my dilemma? Do you see my dilemma? Are you a parent? Are you a parent?"

I keep going back and forth with him. He doesn't like the fact that he has to wait an effing 10 days to find out when school is starting next September.

I actually raised my voice, "YES. I SEE YOUR DILEMMA! HOLD ON!" I went to the superintendent's secretary and told her that I had a guy on the phone who was being totally outrageous. She told me to forward the call to her.

She then was on the phone with him for several minutes, and managed to remain calm. She asked him to tell her when summer camp ends and she could tell him if that comes close to school opening.

When would a summer camp EVER end in September? Why was this guy such a jerk?

Overheard conversation between a visitor and a coworker:
Where are the glass doors?
At the second entrance to the high school.
Where's the second entrance to the high school?
After the first entrance.

I'm exaggerating, but only a little. Coworker went back and forth with this guy. She showed great patience, too!

Answer for question 4608.

Donald Trump as presidential candidate -- what's your opinion? Among your circles of friends and family, is your opinion the norm or does your opinion of him differ from those around you?
Trump is a buffoon and a bully. My friends and family agree. He has no political experience. He may speak his mind, but so does Michael Moore. I like Michael Moore better.

Me: Best…District Office
Caller: Oh, this is the district office?
Me: Yes.
Caller: Oh, ok, I didn’t want the district office, but ok. My son goes to Collins Middle School, and I have to take him out for an orthodontist appointment. We have to be there at 2…
Me: Ok, I can transfer you to the front desk at Collins.
[Do you know what a district office is? Your son isn’t at the district office, so why are you telling me about his orthodontist appointment when I can’t do anything about it?]

Me: Best…District Office

Caller: I don’t know who to talk to. I want to ask someone about Kindergarten transition.
Me: Kindergarten transition or registration? [Some people get confused with labels and I wanted to make sure that it’s the right issue for the right department.] Is this for the *Intermediate Unit?
Caller: Yes. The Intermediate Unit just has this woman who makes appointments; she couldn’t answer my question.
Me: Ok – I just need to know if it’s registration or transition so that I know who to transfer you to. So it’s definitely early intervention from the IU?
Caller: Yes! But the IU couldn’t help me! They couldn’t answer my question! This woman, I spoke to this woman, and –
Me: I know – I just wanted to make sure that it was transition, so I know who to transfer you to.
[Stop telling me about this woman. I just wanted to know if the issue involves transition or registration!]
*An Intermediate Unit is an entity that is a liaison between the state government and schools. Pennsylvania has them, but I don’t know if other states do.

Me: Best…District Office
Caller: I just moved to the area and I want to register my children.
Me: Ok, I’ll transfer you to our registrar.
Caller: Hold on a second, I’m just making sure that I live in the district. I’m in 19128.
Me: We don’t look at zip codes, what township are you in?
Caller: I don’t know. I moved to Riverview Lofts next to Rolling Hills National Park.
Me: Oh, I’m sorry – that’s Pollyclaire School District not ours.
Caller: It’s not Best?
Me: No, it’s Pollyclaire.
Caller: It’s not Best?
Me: No, it’s Pollyclaire.
Caller: It’s not Best?
Me: No, it’s Pollyclaire.
Caller: So I should call Pollyclaire?
Me: Yes. Call them.

Me: Best...District Office
Caller: I'd like to talk with Mrs. Mango about registering my child.
Me: Ok, Oh - I see that she's on another line. That's ok, just leave a message and she'll get back to you.
Caller: We're moving from Simpsons Elementary to Porkpie Elementary, and I need to register for the new school.
Me: I'll transfer you to Mrs. Mango. Just leave a message.
[Danger, you told her to leave a message. She didn't know that you meant that you were going to transfer her to Mrs. Mango's extension so that she could leave her message there. Bad, bad Danger. But it all worked out.]

Answer for question 4603.

Who do you think the Republican and Democratic nominees will be for the 2016 presidential election? If those two did become the nominee for their party, which do you think would win? What person do you really wish would run for president in the future?
I think that Governor Christie will get the Republican nomination and Hillary Clinton will get the Democrat nomination. Dukakis would've been good. I also like Biden. After the presidential election, I'd like to see Obama on the Supreme Court.

Is the Caller [All] There?

I get many calls at work, "Hello. I'm an alumni." Huh? I want to scream YOU ARE NOT AN ALUMNI! YOU ARE AN ALUMNUS OR AN ALUMNA!" But I can't scream at these callers. So I suffer in silence.
________________________________________________________________________________________________

We had a 2-hour delay because of the East Coast blizzard. I got so many calls!

I'll share my end of the conversations:

A two-hour delay means that everything is delayed by two hours. So if your drop-off time is 8:30, today it will be at 10:30.
A two-hour delay means that everything is delayed by two hours. No, not just Kindergarten. It's the whole district. The message means that the whole district has a two-hour delay, and PM Kindergarten has a modified schedule.
A two-hour delay means that everything is delayed by two hours. So if your child gets the bus at 7am, he'll get the bus at 9am.

This is from one conversation:
A two-hour delay means that everything is delayed by two hours. So, if school starts at 9:05, it will start today at 11:05. That's right...11:05...A two-hour delay means that everything is delayed by two hours...yes, the elementary schools usually begin at 9:05, so today, it'll be 11:05. Yes...11:05 today...so if you usually drop off your child at 9am, you can drop her off at 11am...A two-hour delay means that everything is delayed by two hours...right...that's it... Everything is delayed by two hours...A two-hour delay means that everything is delayed by two hours...

He called back!
A two-hour delay means that everything is delayed by two hours...so if your daughter begins school at 9:05, she'll begin at 11:05 today...your son? What school? Ok, everything is delayed by two hours...middle school starts at 8am, so today, it'll start at 10am...Ok, no problem...10am. Right...yes, 11:05...yes...ok, sure, no problem...take care now, bye!
